Eyelash Extensions Tips

How to Choose The Right Eyelash Extension Style To Suit Your Eye Shape

Eyelash extensions are not one-size-fits-all; it requires an understanding of the unique eye shape, eye spacing, and face shape and should be customized to suit individual features. Knowing your eye shape will help you accentuate it when choosing an eyelash extension style. Luckily, figuring out if you have round or almond-shaped eyes isn’t as difficult as it seems. Here’s how to figure it out!

What is my eye shape?

There are six main eye shapes — round, monolid, hooded, downturned, upturned, and almond — and they’re all fabulous in their own way. You may have also heard the following descriptions for your eyes: wide-set, asymmetrical, big, small, close-set, and deep-set. While they’re certainly worth mentioning, these descriptions aren’t all-inclusive.

Round eye shape

  • Round eyes are usually large, prominent, and look more circular.
  • The cornea of round eyes is surrounded by white all the way around.
  • The inner and outer corners of round eyes are rounded and not pulled inward or outward.

Eyelash extension tips for round eyes:

The goal of mapping for the round eyes is to create a more elongated and defined appearance. Mapping for round eyes typically involves placing longer lashes towards the outer corners.

  • Recommended: A natural or the Cat Eyelash style. Having the length concentrated toward the outer corners will help elongate the eyes, creating the illusion of a more almond eye shape. Opt for something looser, such as a B or C curl, as these will complement the eye shape.
  • Avoid: Doll, open-eye lash style, and avoid strong curls like CC and D curls. It can end up looking like they’re in a permanent state of shock.

Monolid eye shape

  • Common in Asian women, monolid eyes feature a less apparent crease. It is often called a shallow or smooth eyelid.

Celebrities with monolid eyes:

Lana Condor, Sandra Oh, and Lucy Liu has this eye shape.

Eyelash extension tips for monolid eyes:

Mapping for monolid eyes typically involves placing longer lashes towards the end of the lash line to create a more defined and lifted look.

  • Recommended: Kitten eye and cat-eye style.
  • Avoid: Natural mapping doesn’t favour monolid clients.

Hooded eye shape

  • Hooded eyes feature a heavy brow bone with a deep-set crease.
  • When hooded eyes are open, the eyelid isn’t generally visible and retracts into the crease.
  • As you’ve aged, the eyelid space has diminished, taking on a hooded appearance.

Celebrities with hooded eyes:

Blake Lively, Jennifer Lawrence, and Emma Stone have hooded eyes.

Eyelash extension tips for hooded eyes:

Mapping for hooded eyes typically involves placing longer lashes towards the end of the lash line to create a more lifted appearance and open up the eyes.

  • Recommended: Kitten eye and Cat eye style. Select a curl that extends past the hood of the eyelid before curling up; this will ensure the effect is noticeable. A specialized curl for this is C and L curls.
  • Avoid: Avoid strong curls like CC and D curls. These will curl so much that the tips almost blend into the lid, resulting in an unnatural look and possibly even discomfort for your eyes.

Downturned eye shape

  • The outer corners of downturned eyes are lower than the inner corner.
  • Also known as a “descending eyelid,” it features an upper lid that dips to meet the lower lash line.

Celebrities with downturned eyes:

Katie Holmes, Anne Hathaway, and Charlize Theron have downturned eyes.

Eyelash extensions tips for downturned eyes:

Mapping for downturned eyes typically involves placing longer lashes towards the center of the lash line to create a more lifted and balanced look.

  • Recommended: Doll or open-eye style and lift the outer corner with a curl like CC or D.
  • Avoid: Cat eye style.

Upturned eye shape

  • Upturned eyes have outer corners that turn upward and are higher than the inner corner.
  • Also known as “cat eyes,” upturned eyes tilt upward, giving an exotic appearance. Ask yourself if you look like you’ve had an eye lift!
  • The bottom lash line of upturned eyes curves upward to meet the top lashes at the outer corner of the eye.

Celebrities with upturned eyes:

Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, and Rihanna all have upturned eyes.

Eyelash extension tips for upturned eyes:

Recommended: Cat eye style or natural style to create a more balanced look.

Avoid: Doll/open eye style and D curl.

Almond eye shape

  • Almond eyes are slightly pointed outer corner and wider in the center. — just like an almond!
  • They have a visible crease on the lids. The ends of their eyes taper at the tear duct and the outer point.

Celebrities with almond eyes:

Beyoncé, Eva Longoria, and Mila Kunis have almond-shaped eyes.

Eyelash extension tips for almond eyes:

  • Recommended: Almond eyes can wear practically any eyelash extension style.

Measuring Eye Spacing

The spacing between the eyes is another important factor to consider when lash mapping. Eye spacing refers to the distance between the eyes, and there are two common types of eye spacing: close-set eyes and wide-set eyes.

Close-set eyes:

These eyes are characterized by a smaller distance between the eyes. The goal here would be to draw attention to the outer corner of the eyes by adding longer lashes in that area in the style of the Cat Eye. Creating additional length on the lashes in the outer corner and gradually shorter length moving toward the inner corner will make a big difference.

Eyelash extension tips for close-set eyes:

  • Recommended: Cat Eye and Kitten Eye style.
  • Avoid: Doll or open-eye mapping.

Wide-set eyes:

These eyes are further apart than the average eye spacing, with the distance between the eyes being more than the width of one eye. The goal of mapping for wide-set eyes is to create a more balanced and symmetrical appearance. This eye shape needs more attention towards the inner corners at first. It’s also best to add the longest lash extensions in the middle of their eyes to balance out the length.

Eyelash extension tips for wide-set eyes:

  • Recommended: Doll or open-eye mapping.
  • Avoid Elongated cat eye style.

Mapping for Different Face Shapes

In addition to eye shape, orientation, and spacing, it’s essential to consider the face shape when lash mapping. Different face shapes require different lash mapping techniques to create the most flattering look.

Wide face:

For clients with a wide face, it’s best to create a lash map that elongates the eye shape. This can be achieved by placing longer lashes towards the outer corner of the eye.

Eyelash extension tips for wide face:

  • Recommended: Cat eye, natural.
  • Avoid: Doll eye, open eye.

Narrow face:

For a narrow face, it’s best to create a lash map that adds fullness to the eye shape. This can be achieved by placing more lashes towards the center of the eye.

Eyelash extension tips for narrow face:

  • Recommended: Doll eye, open eye, natural.
  • Avoid: Cat-eye.

Now that we’ve got each eye shape covered, let’s move on to the main eyelash extension styles. Here's how to find your perfect match!

natural

Natural eye mapping will follow the natural growth of the client’s lashes. This is a gradual change of shape with no dramatic jumps in length.

  • Effect: Looks the most natural
  • Recommended on: Almond eyes, round eyes, upturned eyes, any face shape
  • Avoid: Hooded eyes, monolid, downturned eyes

Doll eye /open eye

The longest parts of this map are over the iris (using straight lines), then drop down dramatically on the inner and outer corners.

  • Effect: Makes eyes look bigger, corrects downturned eyes
  • Recommended on: Almond eyes, monolid, downturned eyes, hooded eyes, wide-set eyes
  • Avoid: Round eyes, upturned eyes, narrow face shape, and close-set eyes

Cat eye

Stay shorter in length until you reach the pupil then drastically jump up in length from the center of the eye to the outer corner.

  • Effect: Makes eyes look wider, corrects close-set eyes
  • Recommended on: Almond eyes, round eyes, upturned eyes, downturned, monolid eyes, hooded eyes, close-set eyes
  • Avoid: Downturned eyes, wide-set eyes
